Start Keelboat Sailing

Service Description

Taught in four evening sessions out of Collins Bay Marina. This course is designed for beginners and returning sailors looking to refresh their skills in a supportive, hands-on environment. You’ll learn to sail collaboratively with other students on all points of sail, while gaining practical knowledge of how to trim sails, reef, heave-to, and avoid common mistakes that can lead to trouble on the water. By the end of the course, you'll understand the essential parts of a sailboat and how to use them with confidence. You’ll also learn the most important sailing knots. Fair warning: you may leave with a deep, lasting love for sailing that borders on obsession. Students completing this course will be able to competently contribute as crew to the operation of a keelboat in moderate daytime conditions. This course is recommended for those with little boating or sailing experience that want to experience sailing and begin to build basic skills in a relaxed environment and at a comfortable pace. Taught across two weeks on Tuesdays & Thursdays evenings 5:30pm to 9:00pm (12-16 hrs total) Maximum 4 students per course. Course Dates: July 1, 3, 7, 10 (SOLD OUT) July 22, 24, 29, 31 (spots available) August 12, 14, 18, 21 (SOLD OUT) August 26, 28, Sept 2, 4 (spots available) What to bring: At least 1 full litre of water T-shirt and shorts Quick dry shoes (non-marking water shoes or canvas runners are good choices) A full change of warm clothing and footwear Being exposed to wind, water and strong sun, we also recommend: A hat UV sunglasses with safety lanyard Appropriate sunscreen Long-sleeved shirt and pants Rain gear when inclement weather is expected
