Frequently Asked Questions
What do I bring?
You should always bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle and a windbreaker. Layered clothing with wool underlayers on those cooler days and a spare set of clothes for splashes and rain are always welcome - there is plenty of room onboard to bring your bag for the day. We have lifejackets onboard but you're welcome to bring your own Transport Canada approved PFD's.
You offer three different beginner courses, where do I start?
Basic Cruising is the best of the entry-level courses and is taught across at least six sessions. This will save you years of "figuring it out yourself" as you'll learn all of the basics of managing a sailboat. If you have experience in powerboats, canoes, or kayaks, or just bought your own boat and want to fast-track your learning, then you can probably start here.

Start Keelboat Sailing is geared toward people who want to try out sailing, with less emphasis on seamanship and more on being crew-members who know the basics. People with no experience on the water will often take SKS before Basic Cruising.

Introduction to Sailing is meant to be a single session onboard where you get to experience sailing, but the learning is very limited in the short duration. It's perfect for people who aren't sure if sailing is right for them, unsure about the need for courses, or for those who just want to get out on the water on a nice Canadian built sailboat for the afternoon.
My spouse wants to join but isn't as motivated. What do I do?
This is a common consideration when entering a course as a couple or family. The short answer is that everyone onboard must be a Registered Student, but we can teach toward different course standards simultaneously. A common situation is where we do the sessions together but with one emphasis on being the Skipper, and the other being a safe and competent crew-member when help is needed. We'll build on each person's strengths and weaknesses as needed to maximize everyone's long-term enjoyment. Contact us for more details and we'll be happy to offer unique solutions.
