Basic Cruising is geared toward people who are wanting to get into the cruising sailboat lifestyle, whether you're purchasing your own boat, planning to charter in the future, or simply looking to expand on your skills. Limestone Sailing exclusively offers this course in a two week period, comprised of four evenings and one full day per weekend (totalling approx. 32 hours). A typical course runs Monday and Wednesday evenings, and two full Saturdays. Class sizes are a maximum of 4 students. This course is tailored to give you the entry-level skills and experience you will need to have the confidence and ability to cruise on a sailboat as the captain of the boat. This course is tailored to meet the Standards set out by Sail Canada, and successful candidates will receive a Training Certificate that is recognized by Transport Canada (and your insurance company!). Basic Cruising will bring you aboard a proper 34' Canadian Sailcraft for each session and is designed to bring your knowledge and ability up to where you will be feel confident as the captain of a cruising vessel. Topics on this course cover all the basics of sailing, and equally offers you proper training in areas such as safety, weather, seamanship, docking, and navigation. There are no prerequisites for this course, however individuals with no experience on the water should consider the “Start Keelboat Sailing” course prior to enrolling. Our expert instructor has thousands of hours of experience onboard commercial vessels in Eastern Lake Ontario and has been training commercial boat operators since 2019. As of 2024, he has been trained and certified as a Sail Canada Instructor and is here to bring you the best of both worlds.
