Basic Cruising is the gold standard for entering the sailing lifestyle, whether you're purchasing your own boat, planning to charter in the future, or simply looking to expand on your skills. Limestone Sailing Co. exclusively offers this course in a two week period, comprised of four evenings and one full day per weekend (Minimum of 30 hours). A typical course runs Monday and Wednesday evenings, and two full Saturdays. Class sizes are a maximum of 4 students. This course is will give the skills and experience you will need to build to be captain or crew on a sailboat. This is an accredited Sail Canada course, and successful candidates will receive a Proof of Competency that is recognized by Transport Canada (and your insurance company!). Basic Cruising will bring you aboard a beautiful 34' Canadian Sailcraft out of Collins Bay Yacht Club for each session and is designed to build your knowledge and confidence as the captain of your own cruising sailboat. Topics on this course cover all the basics of sailing, in addition to training in docking, navigation, anchoring, seamanship, weather, and enhancing crew comfort and safety. Graduates from this course will often go on to buy their own sailboat, or continue in the Sail Canada training levels toward bareboat chartering in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, or even right here in Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands! There are no prerequisites for this course, however individuals with no experience on the water should consider the “Start Keelboat Sailing” course prior to enrolling. Our expert instructor has thousands of hours of experience onboard both sailboats and commercial vessels in Eastern Lake Ontario and has been training law enforcement boat operators since 2019. As of 2024, he has been trained and certified as a Sail Canada Instructor and is here to bring you the best the Canadian marine industry has to offer.
